Be Still

August 30, 2012

Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we want to speak our minds, or fight, or advocate for ourselves but we simply can’t.  Or even if we try, nothing we can say or do on our own strength is enough to prevail.  God is our advocate. When you know in your heart that you are doing the right thing and have done all you can, this is a scripture to remember: Exodus 14:14 “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Another translation is “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”

Sometimes all we have to do is shut up and let God do his part while we peacefully await the end result. He will step in for us and deliver us. The scripture comes from the story of Moses and the Israelites who escaped from slavery with their master, the Egyptian Pharaoh and his army, in hot pursuit of them during a mass exodus! The Israelites were desparate and cried out to the Lord just before God told Moses to lift his rod and part the red sea so that they could cross on the land without drowning in the water. The thing about it is that God allowed for the Pharoah’s heart to be hardened. He was a cruel, merciless slave master with so much power over the enslaved Israelites. They were miserable and couldn’t take his cruelty and oppression anymore. However, because God allowed for the Pharoe’s heart to be hardened, the Pharaoh chased after the run away slaves so that he could capture and brutally punish them for fleeing from him. God allowed for this to happen so that he would get all of the glory because when Moses parted the red sea, the waters were divided just long enough for the Israelites to safely cross on dry ground.  As the Egyptian Pharaoh and his army entered onto the path to the other side the sea closed up and and they all drowned.  The Israelites watched in awe of God’s power and were able to see the power of God and there was no denying that he was on their side. This is the SAME GOD who loves us and is on our side too. So remember this story and remember this scripture “And Moses said to the people: Fear not: stand and see the great wonders of the Lord, which he will do this day: for the Egyptians, whom you see now, you shall see no more for ever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” Exodus 14:13-14

Sometimes God will allow for people’s hearts to be hardened towards us just so that we can rely on him to get the Glory by revealing his power when he advocates for us.
